Environmentalists: Are we "spitting in the wind"?

Thanks to Facebook, I've recently found a few old friends from college. Yesterday, I caught up with my friend, Clay, who said he'd seen my green blog link on my profile. He laughed (in a good way), picturing me gardening and baking bread. And he said he should really start recycling.

"But, tell me," he said, "if I start recycling or whatever, aren't we still just 'spitting in the wind'?"

What do you tell people who ask if your efforts are futile?

I would tell him, "It would be less futile if you do it too." Every time someone else gets going on making green changes, it helps.

Good question. Many of us "greensters" have the same question and concern. You start with your own little world and so on and so on...I visualize my own vegetable garden and compost pile. A landfill that has less stuff. If that makes you feel good and you can find one green thing that makes someone else feel good, that is one less step from your efforts from being futile. In the New York Times, a little back, Michael Pollan wrote an article entitled, Why Bother? Some good answers. (By the way: I am auctioning off this URL name.)

Even if I don't make a huge difference, I'm not going to teach my children to "give up". Ane enough people together can make a difference.
BTW, I love Michael Pollan's Why Bother? essay!
